Today I’m looking again at IBC and all kinds of messaging and bridges—and the more I look, the more it feels like “cross-chain” boils down to this: who are you trusting to “relay the message” for you?
In a single cross-chain, besides the frontend you click, you also have to trust the chain’s own consensus, whether the light client/validation logic is implemented correctly, whether the relayer will go offline or act maliciously, and how the destination chain handles this message (contract permissions, upgrade rights, and who controls the pause switches).
My current habit is to scan first before interacting: is the verification method a light client or multisig/oracle? Is the upgrade permission effectively in the hands of a single team—one group holding the keys? If something goes wrong, is there an emergency pause mechanism that can’t be abused…?
I’m tired, but I’m still here—at least I’ll outline the traps first.
Also, I’ll mention it since I’ve been chatting about it recently: in some places, people are talking about adding taxes and how strict or flexible compliance is. When deposit/withdrawal expectations change, people’s tolerance for the “cross out and then come back” route on the chain also tends to drop.
Anyway, I care even more about fees—and I’m even more afraid of getting stuck on the bridge.
That’s it for now.
