Hermes this time uses Codex as the execution layer, focusing on the "brain" and moderation, with 17 tools injected via MCP, making the architecture quite clear. /codex-runtime toggle design also gives users the choice, not forcing it.

After OpenClaw, Nous Research's Hermes Agent also handed over the OpenAI model cycle to Codex
According to BlockBeats, Hermes Agent has added support for the Codex runtime. Once enabled, terminal, editor, sandbox, and MCP calls for openai/* and openai-codex/* are executed within Codex, while Hermes is only responsible for session handling, slash commands, gateways, memory, and skills review. Hermes registers itself as Codex’s MCP server and injects 17 tools (including web search, browser automation, visual analysis, image generation, etc.) into Codex via stdio; requests such as web_search are routed back to Hermes through MCP. The default is opt-in: /codex-runtime enables Codex, and /codex-runtime auto switches back.
