Wu Shuo learned that the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) under the U.S. FBI released data showing that in 2025, IC3 received over 13,400 complaints involving cryptocurrency self-service terminals, with related losses exceeding $388 million. The number of complaints increased by 23% year-over-year, and the losses increased by 58% year-over-year.

More than half of the complaints involved people over 50 years old, with related losses exceeding $302 million.
IC3 stated that criminals often provide detailed guidance to victims on how to withdraw cash from banks, find crypto ATMs, and deposit and send funds through terminals.
IC3 warned that the statistics pertain to scam complaints involving the use of crypto ATMs, and the overall losses are not necessarily solely caused by crypto ATMs.

The IC3 data may just be the tip of the iceberg; many victims don't even know where to go to file a complaint.

More than half are over 50... The silver-haired group is really the most vulnerable entry point for Web3.

The KYC process at self-service terminals is essentially useless, and the issue of regulatory lag has finally been exposed.

Withdrawing cash from the bank → using an ATM → depositing coins, this process is so smooth that it scores full marks in scammer psychology.

What are encryption ATM manufacturers feeling right now? Business is booming but their reputation is ruined.

The last line, “It’s not necessarily caused entirely by crypto ATMs,” translates to: the pot isn’t just on us, but it’s definitely pretty big.

Post a large sign next to the ATM: Any phone call asking you to deposit money here is a scam.
