I heard that Ross Ulbricht sold items from his time in prison for Bitcoin and amassed over 1.3 million Prison IDs, clothing, and paintings—all of it went under the hammer. The most expensive was his 2024-25 ID card, which sold for 5.5 BTC. When I learned that the full set of three documents fetched 7.5 BTC (which was about $780,000 at the time of the auction), it struck me as quite symbolic.

Ulbricht himself explained that he wants to leave this chapter behind—that he’s leaving Arizona and preparing for travel. I understand the logic: why keep reminders of prison? What’s interesting is that this coincided with his appearance at Bitcoin 2025—the first time he went public after Trump’s pardon. At the conference, he spoke about freedom and decentralization, which apparently touched people.

What really amazed me was that, a few days later, he received a donation of 300 BTC—about $23 million at the current price. One of the largest crypto transfers of the year. It seems the Bitcoin community is taking his return quite seriously. While his past is controversial, the message about freedom and empowerment clearly resonates with people. It will be interesting to see what Ross Ulbricht does next in the crypto space.
