I just looked at the weakest currencies in the world, and it's incredible how different the situations are. The Iranian Rial tops this unglamorous list – with an exchange rate of about 0.000024 USD per Rial, it clearly shows how sanctions and political instability can destroy a currency.

Then come the Vietnamese Dong and the Sierra Leone Leone, both struggling with massive economic challenges. The Leone is still recovering from the effects of the Ebola outbreak, while the Dong suffers from declining exports. The Laotian Kip and the Indonesian Rupiah are also among the weakest currencies worldwide – high inflation and debt problems are the main drivers.

What fascinates me: The weakest currency in the world is not automatically a sign of poverty, but rather of economic shocks and mismanagement. It's interesting to observe how these countries recover from it – some manage to, others struggle with it for a long time.
