Vance Responds to Trump Stock Trading Controversy: President Does Not Trade Stocks Personally, Supports Ban on Insider Trading by Congress Members

On May 21, U.S. Vice President Vance addressed the controversy surrounding Trump's stock trading during a press conference, stating that Trump is very wealthy and does not personally engage in stock trading, with his investments managed by independent wealth advisors. Previously, the U.S. Office of Government Ethics revealed that Trump's accounts conducted approximately 3,700 stock trades in the first quarter of this year, involving companies such as Palantir, Dell, and Micron. Some of these trades occurred after Trump mentioned the related companies in public speeches or on social media, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Vance denied that Trump directly participated in the trades, stating, "The president is not sitting in the Oval Office opening Robinhood to buy and sell stocks; that’s absurd." The Trump Organization also stated that its investment portfolio is independently managed by third-party financial institutions through automated processes. Vance also noted that both he and Trump support a ban on Congress members using non-public information obtained through their public office for stock trading. Earlier reports indicated that the U.S. Office of Government Ethics (OGE) disclosed documents showing that President Trump engaged in large-scale financial transactions in the first quarter of 2026, with a total transaction volume estimated between $220 million and $750 million, including 3,642 stock-related trades, of which 2,346 were purchases and 1,296 were sales. The documents did not disclose specific details of the trades or their profit and loss situations, only showing the range of transaction amounts and quantities.
