I just came across a fairly thought-provoking story. Justin Musk’s 2010 magazine article tells the story of her marriage to Elon, and it contains far too many details for female friends to be wary of.

The most painful part is the so-called “financial transaction” two months before the wedding. Back then, she signed based on her trust in her future husband, only to realize later that she had basically given up her financial rights. Think about it—after PayPal was acquired in 2002, Elon’s net worth soared to more than $100 million, but she could barely access that wealth.

On the surface, their life looked dazzling—private jets, a Bel Air mansion, and a 6,000-square-foot estate. But Justin Musk later understood that Elon had told her at the wedding, “I am the leader of this relationship.” That line actually hinted at the entire power structure. By the time the marriage was over, the only thing left in her name was that house, and her financial independence had long since been eroded by that agreement.

I think the most valuable part of this story isn’t the sensational marriage gossip—it’s Justin Musk’s own reflection. She reminds everyone that trust matters in relationships, but financial awareness matters even more. Before signing any document, make sure you fully understand the terms, no matter who the other party is. This isn’t about mistrust; it’s about taking responsibility for your own future.

While reading this story, I couldn’t help wondering: how many people in intimate relationships give up their right to economic independence just because they trust? Protecting your financial safety is, in fact, protecting your freedom.
