I just realized that many new traders often confuse two concepts in crypto that seem similar: dumping and selling off. Both cause the price to drop, but their mechanisms are completely different, and mistakes here often lead to losing decisions.

What exactly is selling off? It’s actually the moment when large capital truly leaves the market. Meanwhile, dumping is just a temporary trick to force small investors to sell panic, then buy back at a lower price. Understanding this point helps you avoid most market traps.

The easiest way to distinguish is by looking at trading volume. When dumping occurs, the price drops but the volume shrinks, indicating that selling pressure isn’t really strong. This is mainly due to panic psychology among retail traders. But selling off is the opposite—price drops accompanied by explosive volume, reflecting real selling pressure from large capital flows. I see this very clearly when monitoring price drops in previous cycles.

Additionally, you can also rely on support zones. Dumping usually doesn’t break through important support levels, and if it does, the price is quickly pulled back. But selling off will continuously break through support layers uncontrollably, and at that point, you know that capital has truly left.

The most important thing is to look at the quality of the rebound afterward. After dumping, the price usually recovers strongly and forms a V-shape, quickly regaining what was lost. But after a sell-off, the recovery is weak, slow, and even after many sessions, it can’t surpass the previous high—this is a sign that buying interest has vanished.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is: crypto doesn’t lack opportunities, but it lacks patience. Understanding what selling off is and how it works will help you avoid panic selling when the market is just “testing confidence.” Don’t rush to sell out of fear, and don’t greedily buy when capital is truly withdrawing. In investing, it’s not about being fast to win, but about understanding correctly and staying consistent. Those who grasp the rules of capital flow can go far in this crypto world.
