Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump conducted a three-day state visit to China, marking the first time a U.S. president has visited China in nine years. As a major event in one of the world's most important bilateral relationships today, this visit has become one of the most watched international events of 2026. Given the ongoing differences between China and the U.S. on issues such as tariffs, export controls, and the situations in Ukraine and Iran, and even occasional clashes, both sides entered the meeting with pragmatic and rational expectations for the outcome. Therefore, although China extended a very grand state visit reception and warm hospitality to President Trump, the two countries did not immediately issue a joint statement after the summit, a result that was expected.
