Just came across something interesting about Pakistan's currency over the decades. The dollar story is actually pretty wild when you look at the long-term trend.

Back in 1947 when Pakistan gained independence, 1 USD was only 3.31 PKR. It stayed rock solid at that rate for almost a decade through the 1950s. Then things started shifting around 1955 when it moved to 3.91, and by the early 1960s it had settled at 4.76 PKR per dollar.

But here's where it gets interesting - there was barely any movement for like 15 years. From the late 50s all the way to the early 70s, the exchange rate was basically frozen. Then suddenly in 1972 it jumped to 11.01 PKR, and things started moving more regularly after that.

The real acceleration happened from the 1990s onward. By 1999 we're already at 51.90 PKR per dollar, and the devaluation kept accelerating. Fast forward to 2024 and you're looking at around 277 PKR for a single dollar. That's a massive depreciation compared to what it was in 1947.

It's a pretty clear picture of how currency values shift over 77 years. The usd to pkr in 1947 was stable for decades, but the trend since the 90s shows consistent pressure on the rupee. Wild to see it visualized like this.
