Today is May 22nd, the day the Bitcoin community worldwide commemorates a legendary event - "Bitcoin Pizza Day." I just rediscovered this story and find it truly thought-provoking.

It all started on May 18, 2010, when a programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the Bitcoin forum with a simple message: he wanted to use 10,000 Bitcoins to buy two pizzas. At that time, Bitcoin was just emerging, its real value was still very uncertain, and almost no one believed that this "virtual currency" could be used to buy anything.

But that’s what makes it interesting. Laszlo Hanyecz didn’t see Bitcoin as an asset to hold onto, but as a real currency that could be used. This idea was quite bold for that time. After waiting four days, a 19-year-old from California named Jeremy Stidvent finally agreed, using a credit card to order pizza for Laszlo and receiving 10,000 Bitcoins in return.

Back then, the value of 10,000 Bitcoins was only about $30. But as Bitcoin’s price started to rise, this story became much more fascinating. In 2013, when Bitcoin surpassed $1,000, those two pizzas were worth over $10 million. By 2021, when Bitcoin hit $60,000, that meal was worth $600 million. Today, with Bitcoin at $77,430, the value of that pizza has reached about $774 million.

But what impresses me most isn’t the number itself, but Laszlo Hanyecz’s attitude towards the event. When asked if he regrets it, he said that at the time, Bitcoin was just "free money" from mining with a graphics card, and trading it for pizza was quite a good deal. Laszlo Hanyecz even continued buying pizza with Bitcoin afterward, spending a total of about 100,000 Bitcoins. He doesn’t regret it, isn’t sad, and still lives a normal programmer’s life.

Jeremy Stidvent also has a similar perspective. He quickly spent the 10,000 Bitcoins he received on travel and living expenses. Although now his wallet only contains Bitcoin worth $119, he has no regrets about being one of Bitcoin’s earliest users, witnessing its history.

This story teaches us that life is all about choices, and sometimes you inadvertently participate in historic events. Even though Laszlo Hanyecz and Jeremy missed out on a huge fortune, they still maintain a positive attitude. On Bitcoin Pizza Day, we not only remember the "most expensive pizza in the world," but also honor the pioneering spirit and initial trust in the history of cryptocurrency.
