Just did some digging into China's wealthiest cities and honestly, the wealth concentration is pretty wild. If you're looking at where the real money is flowing in China, you've got to understand the richest city landscape.
Shanghai's sitting at the top with per capita income hitting 88,300, followed by Beijing at 85,000. These two are basically in their own tier. But what's interesting is how the richest cities outside these megacities are performing.
Shenzhen's right there at 81,100 per capita income, and there's a reason for that. The concentration of major tech powerhouses is insane - Huawei, Tencent, BYD, DJI. It's basically China's answer to Silicon Valley, which honestly tracks when you see the innovation coming out of there.
Then you've got Guangzhou at 77,800, Suzhou at 77,500, and Hangzhou at 76,700. Suzhou used to be the global industrial output leader, and it's still competing with Shanghai and Shenzhen for dominance. Hangzhou's benefited massively from being Zhejiang's capital - capital status really matters for attracting talent and capital.
Ningbo's another interesting one at 75,000 per capita. The richest city for port infrastructure arguably, since Ningbo Port is literally the world's largest. Everything from Saudi oil to Australian iron ore to Indonesian coal flows through there. The industrial output ranks top ten nationwide.
Nanjing at 74,800 as Jiangsu's capital, Xiamen at 74,200 in Fujian, and Shaoxing at 72,900 round out the top tier. What's wild about Shaoxing is the wealth concentration despite being smaller - Jack Ma's from there, the Nongfu Spring owner is from there. It's adjacent to both Hangzhou and Ningbo, so there's serious economic spillover.
If you're a college grad trying to maximize earnings in China, these richest cities are where you want to focus. The per capita income differences between these top cities and the rest of the country are substantial. A family of four in Shaoxing could be looking at nearly 300k annual income, which is a completely different ballgame from most other regions.
