I looked at the GDP per capita figures for 2025 and it's quite striking... South Sudan ranks at the bottom with only $251 per person. Just after that, Yemen at $417 and Burundi at $490. Honestly, when you see these numbers, you realize the huge gap that exists.
What surprised me is the concentration of these 50 poorest countries. Sub-Saharan Africa clearly dominates the ranking - you find names like the DRC, Niger, Somalia, Nigeria that are well positioned at the bottom of the list. But there are also some Asian countries hanging around, like Myanmar at $1,177, Nepal at $1,458, Laos at $2,096.
It's interesting to note that even among these 50 poorest countries in Africa and elsewhere, there are huge disparities. Between South Sudan and India, which closes the list at $2,878, there's a factor of 11. It really shows how massive economic inequalities are on a global scale.
