I've noticed something really troubling this week while scrolling through social media. This influencer with tens of millions of followers casually promotes a crypto called Beercoin on their Instagram stories, without even claiming to be an expert. The thing that bothers me? They clearly say they won't sell until the token multiplies by 10, which smells like a classic trap.
Beercoin skyrocketed to a market cap of 250 million in just a few days thanks to this buzz. But look at the reality today: the project has completely collapsed, and the market cap has fallen to barely 700k. It's exactly the scenario we've seen repeating for years with celebrities and memecoins.
What fascinates me is the pattern. These influencers build an image of wealth and generosity to gain the public's trust, then they use that trust to push them into crappy investments. It has become a full-fledged business model. Do you remember DJ Khaled with Centra Tech in 2017? Or Floyd Mayweather who created FLOYD and deleted all his tweets after the rug pull? Even Kim Kardashian was fined $250k by the SEC for her association with EMAX.
What’s changing now is that platforms like Pump.Fun make this even easier. Any influencer can create a token in minutes, buy a large share, promote it on their networks, and once liquidity hits a few million, boom, they sell and leave their followers to deal with the losses.
The mechanics are always the same: attract naive buyers who become the exit liquidity. The project creators run off with the gains, the token crashes 99%, and people wonder where their money went.
What really makes me angry is that these characters build their fortune on the trust they've gained from their fans, only to betray them without hesitation. It’s a pure manipulation cycle.
If you see an influencer recommending a random memecoin, especially without a clear disclaimer, that’s a huge red flag. The SEC should really focus on these practices instead of just chasing big exchanges. But hey, as long as it’s profitable for these scammers, it will keep going.
Stay vigilant about this kind of stuff. Projects without fundamentals sponsored by celebrities are pure poison.
