Just saw this and honestly it's wild - Dean Skurka, CEO of WonderFi, got kidnapped in Toronto last year and had to pay 1 million CAD to get released. Like, the guy runs one of Canada's biggest crypto exchanges and still got grabbed during rush hour. Crazy part is he came out unharmed and said all client funds were safe, so that's good at least.
But here's what got me thinking - this isn't even rare anymore. Thailand just busted a whole extortion ring with cops involved, they were targeting crypto people for millions in USDT. And with bitcoin hitting new all-time highs, it seems like these kidnappings and extortion schemes are becoming more common. Skurka's situation is just one example of what's happening across the board.
The thing about Dean Skurka's case is it shows how visible crypto execs have become. You've got rising gun violence in Toronto, crime going up, and now crypto kidnappings on top of it. Makes you wonder if this is just the cost of being a known figure in this space right now. Consensus is coming to Toronto in May too, so it'll be interesting to see how the community reacts.
