Just scrolled through the latest cost of living rankings and honestly, it's wild how Switzerland absolutely dominates. Zurich, Geneva, and Basel are basically the most expensive city in the world tier - like we're talking 12.5% more expensive than New York just to exist there. I didn't realize how extreme it gets until I saw the full breakdown.

So the way they measure this is pretty straightforward. They use NYC as the baseline at 100 points, and anything above that means you're paying more. Zurich sits at 112.5, Geneva at 111.4, Basel at 110.7. It's insane. They factor in housing, food, transportation, utilities, entertainment - basically everything. If a city scores 112, you're paying roughly 12% more than New York. If it's 60, you're getting a 40% discount.

What caught my attention is that six of the top expensive cities in the world are all in Switzerland. Like, all six. Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne, Lugano, and Bern just completely own the rankings. The salaries there are bonkers though - averaging between 7,900 to 10,170 USD monthly, so at least people are compensated for the insane costs.

In the US, New York is the benchmark at exactly 100 points. Then you've got Honolulu at 94.4, San Francisco at 90.7, Seattle at 86, and Boston at 82.7. California's real estate is brutal - both LA and San Diego made the top 25 at 76.3 each. Tech industry demand is definitely driving those prices up.

Norway's also crazy expensive. Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen, and Stavanger all crack the top 25. Singapore's the main Asian player at 85.3, with Tel Aviv and Hong Kong further down the list.

The most expensive city in the world ranking really shows how wealth concentrates in specific places. Europe absolutely leads the chart, Switzerland especially. It's interesting because you'd think more Asian cities would rank higher given how dense they are, but the data tells a different story. Makes you wonder what salaries look like in those other expensive cities compared to the living costs.
