I just saw some interesting news about ASML regarding their technological developments. So this lithography company from the Netherlands is ready to launch the latest generation of extreme ultraviolet lithography machines for mass production. What makes it interesting is the track record of this machine—it has already processed around 500,000 silicon wafers with minimal downtime, meaning its production performance already meets industry standards for high-precision patterning.

According to Marco Peters, ASML’s head of technology, this new-generation lithography machine is not just a routine upgrade. The technology has already been proven and is ready to be scaled up to larger production levels. But there’s one thing that might be a barrier—its price. The new unit is sold for around 400 million dollars, which is twice the price of the previous EUV lithography model.

So basically, ASML is offering lithography machines with far better performance and higher production capacity, but at a significant premium price. This shows how semiconductor technology continues to develop, even as costs keep growing. The chip industry will need more serious investment going forward if it wants to keep up with this innovation.
