A few years ago, something happened that the crypto community will never forget. Nikolai Mushegian, co-founder of MakerDAO and one of the brightest minds in the space, was found dead on a beach in Puerto Rico in October 2022. He was only 29 years old.
What makes this case particularly disturbing is the sequence of events. Hours before his death, Mushegian posted a series of tweets mentioning intelligence agencies, human trafficking networks, and what he described as a global conspiracy. Then, he simply disappeared.
Local authorities concluded that it was a drowning. They pointed out that the beach has dangerous currents and that there have been other similar incidents. Mushegian’s body showed a small laceration on the skull, nothing more. Case closed, according to official reports.
But here’s the interesting part: the crypto community never fully bought that version. His friends describe Nikolai Mushegian as someone brilliant but facing mental health issues. Some, like Brock Pierce, suggested it could have been self-inflicted. Others simply don’t believe everything adds up.
The truth is, after years, Mushegian’s case continues to raise questions. The timing of his last messages, the circumstances, everything seems too coincidental for some. It’s a reminder that in this space, even the most talented can be vulnerable, and that sometimes the official narrative doesn’t satisfy those who know the details.
It’s one of those cases that makes you reflect on security and what really happens behind the scenes in this world.
