I just realized a pretty important issue that many traders often overlook: what is token unlock and why does it significantly impact cryptocurrency prices.
Actually, what is token unlock? It is the process of releasing initially locked tokens into circulation. These tokens belong to various parties: development teams, early investors, advisors, or ecosystem funds. Locking tokens initially aims to control supply, prevent early investors from dumping the price, and build community trust.
But why does unlocking cause price volatility? It's simple: when a large amount of tokens are unlocked at the same time, selling pressure can be very strong if holders decide to take profits. Market psychology also plays a big role – investors often sell before knowing an unlock is about to happen, creating a domino effect.
I’ve looked at some real cases. With Official Trump (TRUMP), in April 2025, a unlock of 40 million tokens, accounting for 20% of circulating supply, caused concern. But afterward, TRUMP’s price rebounded strongly thanks to positive news. Conversely, Aptos (APT) shows a different scenario: price rises before unlock, peaks right at the unlocking moment, then crashes afterward. This pattern repeated twice until Bitcoin dropped sharply, breaking the usual rhythm.
There are three main factors you need to pay attention to: market sentiment, the amount of tokens unlocked relative to total circulating supply, and the recipients of the tokens. If most unlocks go to the team or early investors (those with large profits), the likelihood of selling is high. But if they go to the community, reactions can be more positive.
To avoid surprises, you need to track the unlock schedule in advance. I usually use Tokenomist – a clear interface that provides detailed unlock rounds. DeFiLlama is also good if you want to filter by date or amount. Additionally, following the project’s X, Discord, or Medium accounts helps because most will announce in advance.
But here’s the important part: don’t assume every token unlock is a bearish signal. You need to analyze more deeply – who will receive the tokens, do they have incentives to sell, is there any accompanying news? Combine technical analysis, monitor token unlocks with reputable tools, and then make decisions. That’s the way to trade smartly instead of just following emotions.
