Been looking at Pakistan's currency history and it's actually wild how much the rupee has depreciated over the decades. Back in 1947 when the country was founded, 1 USD was worth just 3.31 PKR. That rate stayed pretty stable for years, barely moving through the 1950s.

But then things started shifting. By the mid-50s it dropped to around 3.91, then jumped to 4.76 in 1956 and held there for over a decade. The real acceleration happened from the 1970s onward though. By 1972 it was already at 11 PKR per dollar, and from there it just kept sliding.

The 1990s and 2000s saw major devaluation. In 1989 it was 20.54, then by 1999 it hit 51.90. Fast forward to 2008 during the global crisis and you're looking at 81 PKR. The depreciation really picked up after 2018 when it crossed 139, then 163 in 2019, and by 2023 it had reached 286.

So in basically 75 years, the rupee lost like 98% of its value against the dollar. That 1 USD to PKR ratio tells quite a story about inflation, economic policy, and currency debasement over time. Pretty sobering when you think about what that means for savings and purchasing power over generations.
