You know, the John McAfee story just keeps getting darker the more you dig into it. His widow Janice is still living in Spain, dealing with the aftermath of his death in that Barcelona prison back in 2021, and honestly her situation is heartbreaking.
She's basically broke right now. Working odd jobs just to survive, living in an undisclosed location, and the worst part? She still doesn't have answers about what actually happened to him. A Catalan court ruled it was suicide, but Janice has serious doubts about the whole thing. The jail video apparently shows something off - they found him with a ligature around his neck, he had a pulse, was breathing, but the doctors apparently never cleared his airway before attempting CPR. That's not how you're supposed to do it, and she trained as a nursing assistant so she knows.
Here's where the money question comes in, and it's wild. John was worth over $100 million when he sold his McAfee company shares back in 1994. By the time he died though, his net worth was down to around $4 million officially. But here's the thing - he had no will, no estate, nothing set up. Because of a US judgment against him, none of that money was going to pass to Janice anyway. So who inherited John McAfee's money? Basically nobody. It just disappeared into the legal system.
The authorities claimed he made $11 million promoting cryptocurrencies, but he always said he had nothing hidden. He told his million Twitter followers before he died: I don't have anything. But I have no regrets. Whether that was true or just what he wanted people to believe, we'll probably never know.
What's really messing with Janice is that she can't get closure. She wants to honor his last wish - cremation - but his body is still in the prison morgue. An independent autopsy could answer some of her questions, but it costs €30,000 and she doesn't have it. She's spent years trying to see the official autopsy results and the authorities just won't release them. Two years ago she had the money to do it independently. A year ago she still did. Now she's just trying to survive.
She talks about how John always protected her from knowing too much. He released 31 terabytes of information publicly but never told her where it was or what it contained. He said it was to keep her safe, that the authorities were after him, not her. But after his death she was terrified anyway. Now she just wants answers - not to fight with Spain, not for justice, just to understand what really happened to the man she loved.
The Netflix doc came out and painted them as fugitives, but that's not the story Janice wants told. She wants people to remember John correctly, to understand why he did what he did. She's still waiting for that independent autopsy, still waiting to cremate her husband, still trying to figure out what comes next. It's been over five years now and she's still stuck.
That's the reality behind the headlines. A widow with no money, no answers, and no way forward.
