Recently, I’ve been studying the development trajectories of some business legends and found that the name Duan Yongping is truly worth a deep dive.
Speaking of Duan Yongping, many people might not be very familiar, but everyone has used the brands he founded. Xiaowangba and Bubugao are almost universally remembered by those born in the 80s and 90s. But what’s really impressive is that Duan Yongping later cultivated the two major smartphone giants, OPPO and vivo, directly changing the landscape of domestic smartphones. The industry calls him the "Father of Mobile Phones," and this praise is well-deserved.
Interestingly, Duan Yongping himself is extremely low-profile. Compared to entrepreneurs who frequently appear in the media and give various interviews, Duan rarely shows up in public. But it’s this low-key person who has left a profound mark on China’s business history. He has invested in numerous companies and nurtured generations of entrepreneurs, with some even calling him the "Godfather" of China’s business world.
Duan Yongping’s success logic is worth pondering. He didn’t become famous through hype and marketing, but through solid products and operational capabilities. From Xiaowangba to Bubugao, and then to the rise of OPPO and vivo, every step was grounded and steady. This low-key yet highly effective working style is especially rare in today’s era.
Someone asked whether Duan Yongping can be considered the "Chinese Buffett." I think this is a very interesting question. He indeed has unique insights in investment and business, but his style is different from Buffett’s. Regardless of how he is defined, Duan Yongping’s position and influence in China’s business scene are definitely not to be underestimated.
