I just saw a remark from European Commission President von der Leyen, and it’s quite thought-provoking. She mentioned that Russia proposed a ceasefire during Orthodox Easter; does that sound like a sincere gesture? But the reality is far more complicated.

According to von der Leyen, this ceasefire proposal is just a smokescreen. Russia publicly talks about a ceasefire, but secretly prepares to launch even more brutal attacks on Ukraine. This kind of tactic of negotiating first and then turning hostile has been openly exposed by von der Leyen.

This European leader’s perspective is quite straightforward — the ceasefire is just a distraction, and the real goal is to regroup and escalate. Von der Leyen emphasized that we shouldn’t be fooled by superficial peace talks and need to see through the true intentions behind them. For Ukraine, this hypocritical ceasefire proposal is actually another form of threat.

This also reflects the complexity of the current Ukraine situation — behind ceasefire negotiations, deeper strategic considerations are often hidden. Von der Leyen’s statement is a direct response from the EU to this event and serves as a warning regarding Ukraine’s security situation.
