Many beginners ask me: what is win rate and why is it so important? I’ll answer honestly—this is one of the most misunderstood metrics in trading.
Win rate (Win Rate) is simply the percentage of your profitable trades out of the total number. The formula is elementary: take the number of winning trades, divide it by the total number of trades, and multiply by 100. That’s it.
Let me give a practical example. In a month, I made 50 trades. 30 of them closed in profit, 20 in loss. Let’s calculate: (30 / 50) × 100 = 60%. My win rate is 60%. Sounds pretty good, right? But this is where it gets really interesting.
It’s no secret that a high win rate (70-90%) is not yet a guarantee of profit. Such results are often achieved with small profit targets, but when a rare failure happens, the loss can be enormous. On the other hand, a low win rate (30-50%) can be perfectly profitable if your wins are significantly larger than your losses.
That’s exactly why what win rate is cannot be considered separately. You need to look at the risk/reward ratio. This is an indicator of how much you earn on average per trade compared to the potential loss.
Example: a 50% win rate, but a 1:2 ratio (you risk 1 dollar to make 2). Such a strategy will be profitable. But an 80% win rate with a 2:1 ratio (you risk 2 to make 1) can lead to losses. See the difference?
How to increase your win rate? Here are my proven methods:
First—analyze every mistake. Keep a trade journal and write down what went wrong. Second—trade strictly according to your system, without emotions and impulsive decisions. Third—improve your entry point. Open a position only when you see a clear signal, not just for no reason. Fourth—filter trades by the risk/reward ratio. If it’s bad, skip the trade.
In the end, what is win rate? It’s just a number. For stable earnings, you need to balance it with good capital management. An excellent win rate without risk control is a path to draining your deposit.
By the way, if you trade on a popular CEX platform, you can download your trade history from the transaction history or trading journal section. Export the data for the period you need, calculate profitable trades manually, or use API tools for automation. The current BTC price is about 77.6K, in case you’re interested.
The main thing is not to get fixated on just one metric. Look at the full picture of your trading statistics.
