There's a story that's been weighing on me about John McAfee's widow, Janice. Most people know McAfee as the antivirus guy turned crypto personality, but few know what happened to his wife after his death in that Barcelona prison back in 2023.
Janice is still there, in Spain, in an undisclosed location. She's been surviving on odd jobs, running low on funds, and honestly, she's just trying to get through each day. What gets me is that she still doesn't have real answers about what happened to her husband, even though a Catalan court ruled it was suicide nearly three years ago.
I've been reading about her situation, and it's honestly heartbreaking. She was protected by friends from homelessness. She talks about how they communicated every single day while he was imprisoned, and she just can't accept the official narrative without seeing the evidence herself. The autopsy report she's been fighting to access would cost 30,000 euros for an independent examination, and she simply doesn't have that money.
What struck me most was her description of the prison response when they found him. She has medical training and noticed something that bothered her - the CPR protocol didn't follow basic procedure. She's not trying to push a conspiracy theory, but she needs answers. That's reasonable.
The money question is wild too. John McAfee went from being worth over 100 million dollars to roughly 4 million at his death. By the time he died, he was claiming he had nothing. He faced a 25 million dollar judgment he couldn't pay, tax evasion charges, and authorities said he'd made 11 million promoting cryptocurrencies. From prison, he told his million Twitter followers he had no hidden crypto stashed anywhere.
With no will, no estate, and all the U.S. judgments against him, Janice inherited essentially nothing. She's stuck in Spain, can't easily go back to the U.S. because she doesn't know what her status is, and she's just trying to honor what John wanted - to be cremated and remembered properly.
There was a Netflix documentary that came out, but Janice felt it missed the actual story, focusing too much on sensationalism instead of understanding why John felt he had to disappear or why she stayed with him.
Her main thing now? She wants closure. She wants to cremate her husband's body, which is still in the prison morgue. She wants people to remember John for who he really was, not the caricature. And honestly, after everything she's been through, she deserves that much.
