I just realized that many people are still confused about what the term hopium actually means. So, in the crypto community, hopium is a term used to mock investors who have unclear hopes. For example, someone still believes their dead coin will moon, even though it's clearly not showing any potential. That’s called hopium.
Actually, hopium is a combination of the words hope and opium. Opium is a drug, right? The concept is similar, but in the form of false hope. This term started to become popular in online communities as internet slang to mock blind optimism.
In crypto specifically, hopium is a way for the community to show that someone is blinded by denial. They don’t want to accept the reality that their investment has already failed. This term has a negative connotation because it’s used to mock.
There’s also a similar term called copium, but it’s different. Copium is more about coping mechanisms, how people handle negative situations. Meanwhile, hopium is a specific term for hope without basis.
For example, on Twitter or crypto groups, you might see people post "A little hopium for the degenerate" or "Wen BTC 100k #hopium". That’s how they express their hope while acknowledging it might not be realistic. So, hopium has become part of the crypto community culture now.
