Just read about this wild case from a few years back. A UK hacker called Spirdark basically broke into musicians' accounts and started selling their unreleased tracks on the dark web for Bitcoin. Pretty crazy how brazen that was.
So the investigation kicked off around 2019 when music agents started reporting unauthorized access. Turns out the hacker was a 23-year-old named Adrian Kwiatkowski from Ipswich. When they arrested him and searched his place, they found over a thousand unreleased songs from 89 different artists on his devices. Ed Sheeran had two of his unreleased tracks in there.
The Bitcoin wallet they recovered showed he'd actually gotten paid in crypto for selling these songs on the dark web. Kwiatkowski eventually pleaded guilty to a bunch of charges - unauthorized computer access, selling copyright material, possession of criminal property. The judge hit him with 18 months in prison.
What's interesting is how this shows the dark web and crypto connection that law enforcement has been trying to shut down. The detective working the case said Kwiatkowski wasn't just some script kiddie either - he was genuinely skilled, which made it even worse because he knew exactly what he was doing to these artists and their companies.
Makes you think about how much damage one person with hacking skills and access to crypto can actually do. The whole Spirdark situation was basically a masterclass in why artists need better security on their accounts.
