I just found out that Ross Ulbricht held a rather unusual auction of his personal belongings. The guy who founded Silk Road raised over $1.3 million in Bitcoin by selling items from his prison cell and things from before his arrest. This took place through the Scarce City platform and coincided with his first public appearance after being released thanks to Trump's pardon.
The details are quite interesting. His 2024-2025 prison ID badge sold for 5.5 BTC, and a full set of three IDs was sold for 7.5 BTC. In addition, his prison drawings, notebook, sneakers, and tracksuit were sold — all together bringing in several million dollars. Ross Ulbricht explained that he wants to leave this chapter of his life behind and is ready to travel, so he's getting rid of things that remind him of the past.
But what’s truly impressive is that a few days after the auction, Lookonchain discovered an anonymous donation of 300 BTC to Ulbricht’s address. That’s about $31.4 million. One of the largest donations in the crypto space for the entire year. Clearly, the community showed its support.
At Bitcoin 2025, Ross Ulbricht spoke and thanked the Bitcoin community for their help during his incarceration. He talked about freedom, decentralization, and unity. He noted that freedom is something still to be won, and it was a pretty powerful speech. His presence there symbolizes a return to the crypto space, albeit from a different position.
It’s interesting to observe how the community perceives his return. Many see Bitcoin as a symbol of personal freedom and empowerment, and Ross Ulbricht is for them a figure embodying that idea, despite his controversial past. The story of his auction and the support he received show how strong convictions are within this community.
