Today, I happened to recall the proverb "If the water is too clear, there are no fish," and realized that most people only know half of that sentence. Most forget the second half: "If a person can keep their integrity, they will have no disciples." In fact, these two halves are related; the first is the surface, while the second reveals the true essence of the matter.
The first principle: when the water is too clear, fish cannot survive. The reason is not only because fish are easily exposed to predators, but also because overly clear water lacks sufficient nutrients. Fish are like us; without nutrients, they cannot survive. Similarly, when we are too strict with others, they will not want to stay close to us. That is why "If the water is too clear, there are no fish" carries such profound meaning.
The second half also contains an important lesson: overly cautious and overly clever people are unlikely to have friends. The word "father" here refers to careful observation, and "disciples" are companions. This sentence warns us that if we always judge others critically, demanding perfection from them, they will eventually drift away.
I think that is why tolerance is so important. No one is perfect, including ourselves. At home with family, instead of arguing over every small detail, it’s better to respect your parents’ limitations and understand them. With spouses, find common ground but still retain differences; that’s how a marriage can be sustainable. With children, praise more and criticize less, and you will see your children improve naturally.
The same applies in the workplace; the strength of the collective is always greater than individual effort. When working harmoniously with colleagues, respecting each other's ideas, and not demanding perfection due to disagreements, new innovations can emerge.
The proverb "If the water is too clear, there are no fish" is actually a life lesson. It teaches us that tolerance is not weakness but a form of wisdom and cultivation. Life is too short to worry about every detail or demand that everyone be like us. Being less harsh, less strict, and more tolerant is the way to live better.
