I did some digging into the history of the most expensive NFTs ever sold, and it's crazy to see how this market has exploded. The fascinating thing is that the most expensive NFT of all time is Pak's The Merge, sold for $91.8 million in December 2021. But wait, it's not just one buyer – 28,893 collectors participated, each purchasing quantities at $575. It's a completely different concept from other NFTs.
Then you have Beeple, who really changed the game. His Everydays: The First 5000 Days sold for $69 million at Christie's in 2021. Knowing that he created one piece per day for 5,000 consecutive days, you understand why it was such a big deal. The guy literally documented his artistic evolution over more than 13 years.
What really interests me is the diversity of the most expensive NFTs. You have Pak's The Clock at $52.7 million, a clock counting the days of Julian Assange's imprisonment. It's art with a message. Human One by Beeple is a kinetic sculpture that runs 24/7 in 16K, sold for $29 million. And then there are CryptoPunks – this project launched in 2017 that continues to dominate the market.
CryptoPunks are crazy. Number 5822, a blue Alien Punk, sold for $23 million. There are only 9 Alien Punks in the entire series of 10,000. Then there's 7523 at $11.75 million, 4156 at $10.26 million, 5577 at $7.7 million. These most expensive NFTs remain the most sought after by collectors.
And then there are cool things like TPunk 3442, bought by Justin Sun for $10.5 million, nicknamed 'The Joker'. Or Dmitri Cherniak's Ringers #109 at $6.93 million on Art Blocks. XCOPY with his Right-click and Save As Guy at $7 million – a perfect title for an NFT, you know.
What strikes me is that the market has really validated these works as serious art. Axie Infinity and Bored Ape Yacht Club have generated billions in total volume. These collections are not just images – they represent a new form of digital expression and ownership.
The interesting thing now is that many of these most expensive NFTs belong to collectors who keep them. Some have been resold multiple times with prices that skyrocket. The market is still there, even if the hype has come and gone. Anonymous artists like Pak and established creators like Beeple have really laid the foundations for what could be the future of digital art.
