I just realized that many new traders entering crypto often overlook these two important concepts: MSS and CHOCH. Actually, if you understand these two well, you'll be able to catch reversal points before the market actually moves.
The basic market structure shift (MSS) is when the market transitions from one phase to another. For example, from a strong uptrend suddenly beginning to form lower highs, that’s a sign MSS has occurred. I usually look for price zones where the market has previously reversed, because those are key levels where MSS is likely to appear.
But the interesting part is, when you combine MSS with CHOCH, what does it mean? What is CHOCH that makes it so important? It’s the change in the nature of price action. You’ll see clear shifts in momentum, the speed of price increases, or candlestick patterns. For instance, in a downtrend, if you suddenly notice a spike in buying volume or a series of green candles appearing instead of red candles, that’s a CHOCH, signaling a potential reversal.
I’ve applied this method many times and it’s quite effective. The first step is to identify the current market structure you’re trading — whether it’s uptrend, downtrend, or consolidation. Then, monitor for breaks of key levels, which is when MSS might occur. The key is not to rush; you need to wait for confirmation from CHOCH — that’s when the concept of CHOCH becomes practical in your trading.
When you detect MSS along with CHOCH, that’s a pretty strong signal. I usually consider indicators like RSI or MACD to find additional evidence. On higher timeframes (4H, daily), these signals tend to be much more reliable than on lower timeframes.
Risk management is the most important. I always set stop losses around key levels because MSS isn’t always an accurate signal. Sometimes it’s just a temporary shakeout before the market continues in its previous trend.
By the way, to optimize your strategy, you should combine MSS and CHOCH with other tools like support and resistance, candlestick patterns, and indicators. This comprehensive approach will help you make more informed trading decisions. I also often check on Gate to see the price action of related assets, because sometimes these signals appear simultaneously across multiple pairs.
