I just saw some of you asking about what futures are, so I wrote this article to share my experience.
Futures (also called forward contracts) are basically a leveraged trading method on exchanges. Nowadays, most exchanges support this feature for various coins, although not all projects are listed for futures trading. Its operation is quite simple — you place orders based on your trend predictions. Want to bet that the price will go up? That’s a Long. Predict that the price will go down? That’s a Short. If you guess correctly, you make a profit; if not, you lose money. The danger is that futures can quickly wipe out your account, especially for beginners.
Speaking of risks, leverage must be mentioned. Exchanges often allow a maximum leverage of x100, meaning if you have $1 and use x100, you can borrow an additional $99 to participate with $100. The trap here is that if you guess wrong, losses accumulate very fast. When losses hit the limit, the exchange will liquidate your assets — in other words, you lose 100% of your initial capital. That’s why I always warn everyone to fully understand this type of trading before starting.
Regarding risk control, I have a few tips from my personal experience. First, you must know how to use SL (Stop Loss) and TP (Take Profit). Most exchanges have automatic features to set these up, helping you avoid situations where your assets are wiped out because you forgot to take profit or your losses become too large. When placing an order, always set SL and TP from the beginning.
For strategies, I advise beginners in futures trading to follow a few principles. If trading BTC, only use a maximum leverage of x5. For ETH or other altcoins, x3 is safe enough. Another trick is to split your capital into multiple entries to increase your ability to withstand losses. And remember to pay attention to the liquidation point — try to keep it as far away as possible, so that just a quick glance doesn’t result in an email about your assets being liquidated.
What I write here is just personal experience, not investment advice. Futures are powerful tools but also very dangerous if you don’t know how to use them properly. Study carefully before starting to go long or short on an exchange.
