Just caught something important from the Munich Security Conference that's been on my mind. The consensus among world leaders is pretty stark – the post-1945 international order is essentially finished. We're entering what Ray Dalio describes as Stage 6 of his Big Cycle, and honestly, it's not pretty.
What does Stage 6 look like? It's basically chaos where the law of the jungle replaces international law. Power dictates everything. When a country is stronger than the UN itself, they make the rules. No agreements hold if they don't want them to.
Right now we're seeing five simultaneous conflicts playing out: trade wars, tech wars, geopolitical tensions, capital wars, and the looming threat of military conflict. The first four have been brewing for about a decade already. History shows us this pattern – economic friction eventually leads to the shooting starting.
Here's what worries me most: the conditions that preceded WWII are mirroring today. The US-China dynamic, especially over Taiwan, represents the most dangerous flashpoint. Both sides have comparable military capabilities and irreconcilable contradictions. We've seen this movie before.
Look back at 1929. The Great Depression triggered economic wars, protectionism, tariffs. The US embargoed 80% of Japan's oil supply. Two years later, Pearl Harbor. The economic confrontation between Washington and Beijing today follows an eerily similar playbook.
What's the financial implication? Wars get financed through money printing, which destroys government debt and currency value. During conflicts, stock markets shut down, capital controls lock in, and assets you thought were safe suddenly aren't anymore. Ray Dalio has spent decades studying these cycles at Bridgewater Associates – the world's largest hedge fund – and his message is clear.
The classic wealth protection strategy in wartime is straightforward: sell bonds, accumulate gold. It's counterintuitive to most people, but historically it works.
One final thought: all great powers eventually decline. The US is one of history's longest-lasting empires, but we're at a critical crossroads now. Understanding these cycles isn't about doom – it's about positioning yourself correctly for what's coming.
