Okay so this is actually insane. Avi Eisenberg—the guy who pulled off that massive $110 million Mango Markets exploit back in 2022—just got sentenced to 52 months in federal prison. But here's the thing, it's not for the crypto hack. He got sentenced for possessing over 1,200 images and videos of child sexual abuse material that feds found on his computer when they arrested him.
Like, the Mango Markets thing was wild enough on its own. Eisenberg basically gamed the protocol, made a fortune, then literally taunted authorities saying 'what are you going to do, arrest me?' And then it turned out he actually had that stuff on his hard drive. The sentencing happened last May in New York federal court.
So technically Eisenberg was convicted by a jury for wire fraud, commodities fraud, and market manipulation back in 2023 related to the Mango Markets situation, but the actual prison time he's serving now is specifically for the CSAM charges. The judge noted that even though Eisenberg didn't create or distribute the material, possessing it perpetuates harm to victims. His defense tried to argue psychological issues and his background, but the judge basically said nope—this is too serious, average sentence for this is around 4 years anyway.
What's wild is Eisenberg still maintains his Mango Markets actions were legal and within the protocol rules. His legal team is apparently pushing for a retrial on those charges. But after everything went public, he literally fled to Israel, which prosecutors obviously used as evidence against him.
The whole thing is just a reminder that even if you think you're operating in some gray area, authorities aren't messing around anymore—especially when other serious crimes are involved.
