Been noticing something interesting in the energy sector lately. A few insider transactions have caught my attention, and they're worth paying closer look at if you're trying to read what the smart money is doing.
First up, there's CMS Energy. The stock has already put up solid gains in early 2026, up about 11% at that point. A director there recently picked up 2,000 shares for around $150k, bringing their total holdings to 2.7k shares. What's noteworthy is that CMS actually raised its EPS guidance in their January earnings, now targeting $3.83-$3.90 per share. They also bumped their dividend by 11% for 2026, which marks their 20th consecutive annual increase. That kind of consistency tells you something about management confidence.
Then there's Texas Pacific Land, which has been absolutely crushing it in 2026. We're talking 80%+ gains, way ahead of the broader market. A director recently bought roughly 900 shares at $450k total, now holding 2.9k shares overall. What's really interesting about TPL is they've been pivoting into data center infrastructure. They just invested $50 million into a data infrastructure company to develop large-scale data center campuses across their Texas landholdings. That's a smart move given where the market is heading.
DT Midstream is another one worth watching. Up 17% in early 2026, and the CFO just made a move, buying 185 shares for just over $70k. DT operates natural gas pipelines, storage, and gathering systems. In their latest update, they not only increased their dividend but also expanded their project backlog by 50%. That kind of growth in their pipeline of work suggests management sees real opportunities ahead.
The pattern here is pretty clear. When insiders are buying, especially at these price levels, it usually signals they believe in the longer-term story. These aren't quick trades. These are people with deep knowledge of their companies putting their own money where their mouth is. Of course, insider buys aren't a guarantee of near-term performance, but they do give you a window into how management views the future outlook.
If you're looking at the energy sector, DT and the others showing insider strength might be worth monitoring. The fact that multiple energy companies are seeing insider activity at the same time suggests there's broader confidence in the sector's direction right now.
