DeFi Hacks Top $840M in First Five Months as April Losses Exceed $600M

DeFi protocols lost more than $840 million to hacks in the first five months of 2026, with April alone accounting for more than $600 million. The biggest attacks cited were the $292 million KelpDAO exploit and the $285 million Drift Protocol breach, and THORChain halted trading in May after researchers flagged a suspected exploit affecting more than $10 million. Experts from TRM Labs, CertiK, and Blockaid said repeated bridge and admin-control failures, plus AI-assisted reconnaissance, are increasing exploit pressure.
