Meta lays off 8,000 employees in a single day, sending termination emails at 4 a.m. and monitoring remaining employees to train AI
According to Beating Monitoring, Meta laid off 8,000 people on May 20, 2026. Several employees disclosed that the dismissal emails were sent out in a concentrated manner at 4 a.m. that day, after the company had previously required all staff to work from home. The list of those laid off includes core engineers at IC4 level who work high performance with no PIP records, often sleeping less than 4 hours a day and submitting code at 3 a.m.

Employees who were not laid off have had monitoring software installed on their computers. Internal employee Marco pointed out that the company is tracking the operational trajectories of remaining employees to train AI, with the goal of using these AIs to further replace existing positions. Meta is currently experiencing record-breaking profits. Former employee Jeremy Bernier confirmed that internal processes are still executing stack ranking elimination.
