Iran’s Supreme Leader: Near-weapon-grade uranium must stay within Iran

Jinjidu Data, May 21 — According to Reuters, two senior Iranian officials said Iran’s Supreme Leader has ordered that highly enriched uranium close to weapons-grade must not be shipped abroad. This move strengthens Tehran’s stance on one of the key demands the United States has made in peace negotiations. The order may further frustrate Trump and complicate negotiations to end the war between the US and Iran. Previously, Israeli officials told Reuters that Trump has assured Israel that Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium used to make atomic weapons will be shipped out of Iran, and that any peace agreement must include relevant provisions. One of the Iranian officials said, “The Supreme Leader’s instructions and the consensus within the system are that the stockpile of enriched uranium should not leave this country.” The officials said Iranian senior officials believe that sending such material abroad would make the country more vulnerable to attacks by the US and Israel in the future. Khamenei has the final say on the most important national affairs. The two senior Iranian officials also said that deep within Iran there is suspicion that Washington’s pause in hostilities is a strategic deception intended to create a sense of security before resuming airstrikes.
