Harvard alumni-founded AI search engine Exa completes $250 million Series C funding, valuation triples in a year
Exa completes a $250 million Series C funding round, led by a16z, with valuation rising to $2.2 billion, funds used to expand self-built indexing database, train a new generation of retrieval models, and improve throughput. The core moat is full-stack self-built: independent crawler, indexing of 500 billion URLs, self-developed embedding and vector database, avoiding reliance on Google. The engine ranges from 200ms Exa Instant to Deep Max's autonomous deep retrieval, with RL training saving 69% of tokens. Monthly query volume reaches 1 billion, clients include Cursor and Cognition; and it has become one of the first partners of Vertex AI, providing Grounding for Gemini.
