Security researchers discover counterfeit Ledger hardware wallets sold on Chinese e-commerce platforms
ME News reports that a Brazilian security researcher found that the Ledger Nano S Plus purchased on a Chinese e-commerce platform was a counterfeit. It looks similar to the official product, but it failed genuine verification. Disassembly showed that the hardware/firmware had been tampered with: it has internal WiFi/Bluetooth antennas, the chip markings were scratched off, and the firmware indicates the manufacturer as Espressif. The researcher warns users to download LedgerLive only from ledger.com and to buy hardware only from Ledger; if it cannot pass genuine verification, users should stop using it immediately. Previously, more than 50 victims had their mnemonic phrases leaked due to a fake Ledger Live listed on the Apple App Store, with losses of about $9.5 million. PANews
