White House: AI review executive order is set as voluntary, laboratory lobbying sharing period shortened to 14 days
The White House ONCD convened a closed-door meeting with OpenAI and others on May 19, 2026, to announce the upcoming signing of an AI executive order, which could be signed by Trump as early as Thursday, establishing a voluntary pre-review framework and excluding mandatory licensing.
The new regulation requires cutting-edge AI models to share with the government up to 90 days before public release, with labs striving to reduce this period to 14 days before release.
Model standards are jointly developed by the NSA, ONCD, OSTP, and others, with security and intelligence agencies working with the Department of Defense to establish a classified assessment process.
Previously, the Mythos zero-day vulnerability discovery capability disclosed by Anthropic prompted the formation of the new regulation.
