For friends interested in trading U.S. stocks, first, you need to understand the U.S. stock market opening hours. The main trading session is from 9:30 PM to 4:00 AM Beijing time, which is the regular trading hours. If you want to buy the dip or chase high, you can also participate in pre-market trading (starting at 4:30 PM Beijing time) and after-hours trading (ending at 8:00 PM).
It is important to note that the United States switches between daylight saving time and standard time. Daylight saving time begins in mid-March each year, and standard time returns in early November, causing a one-hour change in the time difference. So if you are in Asia, you need to adjust accordingly for U.S. stock market opening times. During standard time, the market opens at 10:30 PM Beijing time, and during daylight saving time, it opens at 9:30 PM.
The U.S. has three major stock exchanges— the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and the American Stock Exchange. The NYSE is the world's largest stock exchange, now mainly relying on electronic trading; NASDAQ is the second largest, fully electronic, with many tech stocks (Microsoft, Apple are there); the American Stock Exchange ranks third, mainly trading small and mid-cap stocks.
Also, keep in mind that U.S. stock markets are closed on statutory holidays, such as New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Some holidays also see markets closing three hours early the day before. It’s best to confirm whether the U.S. stock market is open before trading to avoid waiting in vain.
If you want to learn about the opening times of stock markets in other countries, you can compare them. The Tokyo Stock Exchange opens at 8:00 AM Beijing time, the London Stock Exchange opens at 4:00 PM, and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange opens at 9:15 AM. The opening hours vary across exchanges, so choose based on your trading strategy. Overall, although U.S. stock market opening hours are relatively late for Asian investors, the high trading volume and opportunities make it worth paying attention to.
