Many people make mistakes in understanding the zakat on gold and calculate it incorrectly. I decided to explain to you how to calculate the zakat on gold in an easy and practical way.

First, you need to know that zakat is not optional — it is an obligatory duty on every Muslim who owns gold. The Prophet, peace be upon him, was very clear in the noble hadith about the importance of paying it.

The main point: if you have 85 grams of pure gold (24 karats) and it has been a full Hijri year, you are required to pay zakat. The calculation is very simple — 2.5% of the market value.

But you must pay attention to the different purities. Gold of 21 karats has a purity of 87.5%, and 18 karats has a purity of 75%. For example, if you have 100 grams of 21-karat gold, the pure gold content = 100 × 0.875 = 87.5 grams. Then multiply it by the current price to find the zakat.

A simple example: if you have 100 grams of 24-karat gold and the price is 400 riyals per gram, the value = 40,000 riyals, and the zakat = 40,000 × 2.5% = 1,000 riyals. Done.

The big difference is between gold intended for investment and jewelry you wear daily. Regular jewelry generally does not have zakat according to most scholars, but gold bought for trade or savings definitely does.

This also applies to gold funds and modern gold investments — all of these have zakat in the same way.

The important thing to remember: zakat is not just a financial obligation; it is purification of the soul and wealth. Paying it with a sincere intention increases barakah and promotes social solidarity among Muslims. So do not delay paying it when its time comes.

One last point: make sure to calculate the zakat on gold accurately, because neglecting it is a sin. The eight categories deserving zakat are clearly mentioned in the Quran — the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and others. Do not give it to those who are not eligible.
