I just organized the US stock trading hours and found that many people actually don’t know what time the stock market closes. Recently, Taiwan has entered daylight saving time, and the regular trading hours for US stocks are from 9:30 PM Taiwan time to 4:00 AM the next day. If you include pre-market and after-hours trading, the time span is even longer.
The most troublesome part is that the US switches between daylight saving time and standard time every year, which requires adjustments. Asia does not observe daylight saving time, so the time difference changes constantly. Remember to mark the times, or it’s easy to get confused about when the stock market closes. Additionally, the US has three main stock exchanges — New York, NASDAQ, and the American Stock Exchange. Although their opening and closing times are similar, the types of stocks traded differ: NASDAQ mainly lists tech stocks, while New York features more traditional large companies.
Also, pay attention to US public holidays, which often result in market closures. This year alone, for Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, the market will be closed for several days. Some holidays also have early closing three hours beforehand. If you want to trade, check the calendar in advance to avoid waiting in vain.
