just spent way too much time comparing commodity trading platforms and honestly, there's a lot more options out there than i thought. so if you're looking to get into commodity trading, here's what i found.
most of these platforms let you trade through CFDs, which is actually pretty convenient because you don't need to own the physical stuff. you can go long or short depending on what you think will happen with oil, gold, natural gas, metals, or even agricultural commodities. the spreads vary a lot though.
Mitrade seems to be the go-to for people just starting out. zero commissions, tight spreads, and they let you use up to 1:400 leverage on some precious metals. the demo account is useful if you want to test things before putting real money in. eToro has that copy trading feature which is interesting if you want to mirror what other traders are doing. Plus500 keeps things simple with no commissions either, just spreads. IG Group is more for experienced traders - they've got solid research tools and analytics. CMC Markets is similar but with even more advanced charting. if you're serious and have money to spend, Interactive Brokers and Saxo Bank offer direct market access through futures.
fee structures are all over the place. some charge spreads from 0.02% to 0.40%, others go from 0.1 to 2.0 points depending on what you're trading. saxo bank charges commission per contract which adds up. the regulatory stuff checks out on all of them though.
real talk though - commodity trading platforms aren't all created equal. your choice depends on whether you're a beginner wanting something easy, or if you've got experience and want advanced tools. the asset range matters too. some have 15+ commodities, others go up to 100+. execution speed is critical since prices move constantly.
if i had to pick one for most people, Mitrade keeps coming up as solid overall - low fees, beginner friendly, decent variety. but honestly, it depends on what you actually want to trade and how much complexity you can handle.
