Have you ever stopped to think about who is behind the drug brands we find in virtually every pharmacy in Brazil? João Adibe Marques is one of those names that doesn’t show up much in the headlines, but he helped shape the national pharmaceutical market significantly.



The guy literally grew up inside the industry. His grandfather was a pioneer, founding Laboratório Prata in the 1950s, and his father continued the path. João Adibe started working at 15, helping out in the family laboratory—and basically never stopped. He chose hands-on practice over academia, and that decision defined everything that came afterward.

In 1977, Grupo Cimed emerged, as a result of the merger of companies in the sector. For about 30 years, the founders ran the operation, but when João Adibe Marques took over as president, the story took a different turn. He transformed Cimed from an ordinary laboratory into a national powerhouse focused on affordable medicines, generics, and supplements. His sister, Karla, also played a strategic role as vice president.

The numbers speak for themselves: presence in 90% of Brazilian pharmacies, more than 600 products in the portfolio, 5,000 employees, and revenue that exceeded R$ 2 billion. All of this while keeping the company 100% Brazilian and under family control—something far too rare in this industry.

What stands out is how João Adibe expanded the company’s vision. He didn’t focus only on medicines. He invested heavily in innovation, including experiments at the International Space Station, with plans to invest R$ 300 million in research over five years. The strategy was to position Cimed as a real biotech company—not just a traditional pharmaceutical company.

Outside the corporate world, he also built a strong presence in sports. Cimed sponsors football teams, has a winning track record in volleyball, and maintains its own team in Stock Car. For João Adibe, sports logic—teamwork, clear goals, discipline—is the same as what works in business.

On social media, the entrepreneur shares a lot about his routine and values, frequently using the hashtag #FlyNow, which summarizes his philosophy of action and constant growth. In 2015, his wedding became news, and later the couple moved to Florianópolis in search of a better quality of life. He also appeared on international rankings as one of Latin America’s 500 most influential people, according to Bloomberg Línea.

What makes João Adibe Marques interesting is precisely this combination: family heritage, impeccable hands-on execution, aggressive marketing, and a long-term vision. He proved that in a highly competitive sector dominated by multinationals, it’s possible to keep a company 100% Brazilian and still grow. Cimed’s trajectory under his leadership shows that operational discipline, brand positioning, and the right reading of the market can be just as decisive as any technological innovation.
