Coinbase Blockchain Forensics Help Police Secure Five Criminal Convictions
Coinbase blockchain forensics helped UK police trace stolen crypto and secure five convictions in a Hertfordshire crime case.
Coinbase said its blockchain forensics team helped UK police secure five criminal convictions after tracing stolen crypto assets.
The case involved a Hertfordshire man who was forced to access financial accounts during a violent crime.
Coinbase Alerts Police During Active Crime
In a recent blog, Coinbase said the case began in July, when a 36-year-old man from Hertfordshire went out with friends in Shoreditch, east London.
During the evening, four men befriended him before forcing him to return to his home.
The victim was held against his will and faced violence, according to Coinbase.
He was also forced to access several financial accounts, including his Coinbase account.
When the attackers tried to move funds off the platform, Coinbase said its internal systems detected possible duress.
The company then contacted UK police while the incident was still active.
Coinbase said its main priority was the customer’s safety and support for the police response.
It also said the case showed how blockchain records can assist criminal investigations.
Coinbase Says Blockchain Forensics Helped Police
Coinbase said it was “proud to work with law enforcement to assist in taking down criminals.”
The company said its investigations team identified an ongoing crime and used blockchain forensics to trace those involved.
The company said that work helped lead to five convictions. It also thanked officers at the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, who led the case to conviction.
Coinbase said its Global Intelligence team used blockchain analytics to follow the stolen assets. Investigators traced funds through several wallet addresses and accounts.
The company also said its team linked wallet addresses to specific people. One suspect was linked to a Coinbase account, according to the company’s statement.
