Dare to analyze the movie "Love Letter to Grandma" from the perspectives of realism and human nature.
Undeniably, this is a rare good film in the Chinese-language film industry in recent years, quite heartfelt, and also deeply reflects the stories of that historical period.
But from some clues, I feel that reality may be quite different from what the film presents. For example, I believe that Xie Nanzhi is actually Zheng Musheng's secretly kept second wife.
At the beginning of the film, when the grandson goes to Thailand to find his grandfather and can't find him, then mentions dried meat, and a bunch of grandmother-level people laugh mockingly.
Coupled with Zheng Musheng and Ye Shurou eloping and getting married, I can reasonably infer that Zheng Musheng is a naturally flirtatious person.
Someone like that, who hasn't been with a woman outside for so many years, is hard to believe.
Second, Xie Nanzhi is a strong female lead character. She wants someone to be her son-in-law, but all suitors fail, and only someone like Zheng Musheng can barely qualify as her son-in-law.
Being a son-in-law and living off her family’s support makes it very reasonable for the female lead to want to support him and his family.
Third, after a series of events, Zheng Musheng's character is also recognized by Xie Nanzhi, especially his actions in establishing a school and protecting the inn.
This is a big plus, and it’s obvious that Zheng Musheng and Xie Nanzhi have already developed feelings for each other.
The film later does not arrange for Xie Nanzhi to have a husband.
I think that words like pure loyalty and friendship are not enough to let Xie Nanzhi grow old alone; there must be deeper feelings involved.
Most likely, they made a lifelong private agreement but did not tell others.
With Xie Nanzhi’s looks and abilities, it’s unlikely she couldn’t get married; she just has deep feelings and wants to commemorate her late husband this way.
Fourth, she picked up an abandoned baby, who just happened to be of Chinese descent and, during adolescence, looked very similar to Zheng Musheng.
I actually think this proves that this child is very likely her and Zheng Musheng’s biological child.
Fifth, Zheng Musheng only proposed to give Chinese children in Thailand lessons; he himself has no education and asked friends to teach, using the inn as a venue.
Later, Xie Nanzhi became the teacher herself, which theoretically should mean her contribution was greater than Zheng Musheng’s.
But the schools donated later in the students’ names are all named after Zheng Musheng, which can only suggest influence from Xie Nanzhi.
The film depicts this relationship very ambiguously, without clarifying, so it leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
I think even if both Xie Nanzhi and Ye Shurou fell in love with the same man, the story is still very touching, and Zheng Musheng’s character is not problematic.
This love story is also quite moving.
This remains a very good film.
