If you want to invest in U.S. stocks, I recently realized that you need to know the exact U.S. market hours. Especially since there's a significant time difference with Korea and daylight saving time is also applied, it's easy to miss trading hours.

The major U.S. stock exchanges are NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX, and fortunately, their trading hours are the same, from 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern Time. In Korean time, that's from 11:30 PM to 6:00 AM the next day. From mid-March to early November, when daylight saving time is in effect, the hours are moved forward by one hour, from 10:30 PM to 5:00 AM.

NYSE has been operating since 1792 and is the largest exchange in the world, with about 2,400 companies listed. NASDAQ is home to many IT companies, and AMEX mainly lists mid-sized and small companies. Besides regular trading hours, there are pre-market hours (4:00 AM to 9:30 AM Eastern Time) and after-hours (4:00 PM to 8:00 PM), allowing for more flexible trading.

It's also good to check the U.S. market holidays in advance for 2026. They include New Year's Day (January 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 19), Presidents' Day (February 16), Good Friday (April 3), Memorial Day (May 25), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 3), Labor Day (September 7), Thanksgiving (November 26), and Christmas (December 25). Additionally, early closing occurs at 2:00 AM Korean time on July 2, November 27, and December 24, so be careful.

Unlike the U.S. markets, the Korean market operates from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Tokyo from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (with a lunch break from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM), London from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Korean time 5:00 PM to 1:30 AM), and Hong Kong from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM (with a lunch break from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM). Since each market has different trading hours, investors trading across multiple markets need to check each one.

Understanding the U.S. market hours properly allows you to plan your trades much more efficiently. Especially since the market opens at night Korean time, it's important to decide in advance when to trade according to your lifestyle. Remember that settlement occurs two business days later, and unlike Korea, the U.S. market has no price limit bands.
