I only just figured out the rules for the closing time of the Hong Kong stock market for Hong Kong stocks, so I’m sharing it with everyone. The morning session for Hong Kong stocks is 9:30 to 12:00 every day, and the afternoon session is 13:00 to 16:00. This 16:00 closing time for the Hong Kong stock market is important because before the close there’s a call auction period from 16:00 to 16:08 or 16:10, during which the market closes randomly—kind of interesting.

Before the market opens, there’s also an auction mechanism from 9:00 to 9:30, divided into four short periods, and the rules are fairly complex. Simply put: orders can be freely modified before 9:15; from 9:15 to 9:20 there are price limits; from 9:20 to 9:22 the system automatically matches orders, and then it pauses until 9:30. The closing period works in reverse: first the reference price is announced, and then you’re allowed to place orders.

There are quite a lot of market holidays in 2026 for the HKEX—Lunar New Year, Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Christmas all require a closure. In particular, the day before Lunar New Year, Christmas Eve, and the afternoon of New Year’s Eve are closed directly, with no afternoon session. My suggestion is to remember the key point that the Hong Kong stock market closes at 16:00, and plan your trading strategy in advance, so you don’t get caught off guard by the sudden call auction at closing.

Hong Kong stocks support T+0 trading but T+3 settlement, so you can go long or short, making them more flexible than A-shares. If you want more leverage, there are also methods like CFD—higher risk, but also higher upside potential. It depends on your personal risk tolerance.
